Re: Donations: Annual Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Birthday Celebration
The Mayesville Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Festival Committee is planning the 11th festival celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune with our theme for this year being “Health and Fitness”.
We humbly, ask each Church in the community to continue the outstanding tradition that we all have come to look forward to and appreciate over the past several years, to select a male and female to represent your Church, once again, this year. We ask each Church to please make a donation of at least $100.00. The contestants from the church that reports the largest amount of money will be crowned King and Queen on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 8:30 am sharp, just before the parade kicks- off, at the Mayesville Institute. All monies should be reported by July 6, 2009 at 6:30 pm at a special, called-meeting in Town Hall along with the nominations for King and Queen. We ask for all past Kings and Queens to participate in the parade as well as the 2008 Christmas Mister & Misses Mayesville and past contestants. The monies raised will be given to college students from the Town of Mayesville to help offset the cost of this year’s annual birthday celebration.
Each participating church will be asked to have a representative for the Awarding of Scholarship Funding Committee, which will be asked to decide how best and fairly to award monies raised to our children engaged in the pursuit of knowledge.
The festival is scheduled for July 10, 11 and 12th, 2009 in the
Mayesville Town Square. This year’s Walk-A-Thon is scheduled for Friday, July 10th with an 6:00pm Line-up on the Dr. Bethune Nature Trail, for more information contact: Barbara Benjamin (803) 453-5405. Vendors are welcome and must register in advance. Registration forms will be made available upon request or by calling Al Wheeler (803)565-7082, Major McCombs 972-0373 or Pat Jackson 453-5096. The Parade is scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2009 with a 9:00am lineup time. The Grand Marshall for this year’s Parade is Bryan Kost, Senior Consultant/Legislative Director for the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Former Heavy Weight Boxing Champion of the World Bone Crusher Smith will be in attendance for the Parade along with Former NBA Basketball Legend Xavier (X-Man) There will be an unprecedented amount of McLeod family at the celebration, to join in with, a full day of games, activities and lots of food for the entire family to enjoy; ending up the weekend festival, on Sunday, July 12th, with a dazzling evening of inspirational singing, on the Town’s Plaza, featuring Gospel Legends and Recording Artists Melvin Couch of Atlanta, Ga., Rev. Frank Thompson of the Fantastic Violinaires and William Nelson of the Travelling Four of Kingstree, SC.
And as always, we extend an invitation to your Church to include any UNIT(S) or FLOAT(S) that you desire to be placed in the parade. Please call to confirm participation and, remember to keep in mind our theme for this year, “Health & Fitness” Don’t forget to bring your umbrella and lounge chair!! Most Importantly, Don’t Forget To Have Lots -n- Lots of Fun!!
Also, The Bethune Park will be open throughout the weekend festival; please visit the homestead located west of town, left on Dr. Mary Mcleod-Bethune Rd/Formerly Raccoon Rd., park is on the left.
